Moonshine prances as I tighten the cinch on his Western saddle. He knows what the heavier weight on his back means—a trail ride. I shush him as I start adjusting the stirrups and grab his bridle off the hook. As I ease the bit into his mouth, Michael sidesteps around Arrow to check her cinch. He murmurs to her and she flicks an ear toward the sound of his voice and happily crunches the carrot he brought her from the tack room. When she finishes, he coaxes her into taking the bit into her mouth, little by little, without startling her or being rough.

“You’re good at this,” I say. “Not as good as me, obviously, but you’re good. You’re getting the hang of it.”

“Arrow would make anyone look good,” he says, patting her neck.

I walk up to him and slide my hands into his back pockets, pressing myself against him. He takes a deep breath, and I kiss him lightly on the lips. He caresses my back with one hand and strokes the nape of my neck with his thumb before easing his lips back to mine. I melt under his touch like warmed sugar, letting him tease my lips open and kiss me gently, pulling away and then returning. I wouldn’t be surprised if I ended up in a puddle at his feet, but I pull away and grab Moon’s lead rope.

“Let’s go,” I say as I lead Moon out of the barn.
